Gender and Climate: What should Northern governments do next?
June 2023
GADN Members’ Meeting
It is undeniable that we find ourselves in the midst of a global climate emergency, with the latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) providing unequivocal evidence of an impending climate breakdown.
Moreover, as has been well demonstrated, gender and the climate crisis are intrinsically linked, with women being disproportionately affected, particularly in marginalised communities. At the same time, women are often at the forefront of climate movements and shaping climate action, however, their voices remain largely unheard in government policy, hindering progress towards gender-transformative climate solutions. Instead, Northern governments’ insufficient responses to the climate crisis further exacerbate the existing outcomes of gender inequality.
This GADN Members’ Meeting this ‘Gender and climate – What should Northern governments do next?’ offered the opportunity to hear from feminist experts working at the intersection of gender and climate in different contexts, reflect on the UK’s climate commitments and exchange with others on what this might mean for UK-based advocates working on gender.
